Prescribing Controlled Drugs: Critical Issues and Common Pitfalls

Posted over 4 years ago by Joy Deupree

The Alabama Legislature has passed Senate Bill 229 that gives a nurse practitioner (NP) and a nurse midwife (NM) in a collaborative practice with a physician the authority to prescribe controlled substances in Schedules III, IV and V. The system devised by the Board of Medical Examiners (BME) and the Nurse Practitioner Alliance of Alabama (NP) will be similar to what is currently in place for physician assistants (PAs) whereas a PA in a collaborative agreement with a physician can prescribe Schedules III, IV and V drugs without a collaborating physician’s review or signature, provided such is agreed to in the Collaborative Practice Agreement.

The legislation requires 12 CME credits in advanced pharmacology and prescribing trends and four more credits every two years in order to renew a Qualified Alabama Controlled Substance Certificate (QACSC). The Alabama Board of Medical Examiners and Medical Association of the State of Alabama will offer "Prescribing Controlled Drugs: Critical Issues and Common Pitfalls" on July 13-14 at the Hyatt Regency (formerly The Wynfrey Hotel) in Birmingham. The AUGUST EVENT IS FULL for August 9, 10 and 11 at the Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach. However, another event is planned for November...details to follow.

The Intensive Course in Prescribing Controlled Drugs is designed for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and nurse midwives in all specialties who need or wish to increase their knowledge and ability to effectively prescribe and control medications without the potential for abuse. All other health care providers are invited to attend as well. Register online for either of these conferences or print a registration form and fax it to (334) 269-5200.
