October 1, 2013 and Controlled Substances
Hello Fellow Nurse Practitioners! As October 1, 2013 is fast approaching, the leadership of NPAA would like to make sure all of you are informed on the application dates and what that means to first time applicants of the new prescriptive privileges related to controlled substances for Scheduled Drugs III-V. IF YOU APPLY on any time between October 1 and December 31, 2013 for your FIRST certificate (cost $110); YOU WILL HAVE TO REAPPLY for recertification on or before December 31st, 2013 as ALL certifications must be renewed at the end of the year (renewal fee currently is $60 annually). The take home message: If you really need the certificate and cannot wait until January to begin prescribing, by all means go ahead and apply for it on October 1. The BME is concerned and wanted to be as transparent as possible to make sure all CRNPs/CNMs knew that the renewal would occur within 90 days if they apply on the first day. Knowledge is power, be informed and help inform your peers! Please pass this on to every CRNP/CNM you work with and get the message out on this issue. We don’t want any of our peers to be uninformed.Additionally, NPAA has begun a dialog with the Alabama Board of Nursing leadership in association with the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners leadership in hopes of getting a Q & A Fact Sheet and Power Point Presentation posted soon that gives CRNPs /CNMs a step by step presentation of how to complete the process. As soon as that is available, you will be notified. As always, if you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Respectfully,Joy P. Deupree, PhD, MSN, APRN-BCPresident, NPAAdeupreej@uab.edu
